The UK and US have established a important commercial pact that will ensure zero tariffs on British medicine products being sold in the US market.

The Terms of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to raise expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge guarantees that duties on these key products will be held at zero for a duration of 36 months.

This agreement is in response to previous threats to significantly raise import taxes on branded pharmaceutical imports, with figures discussed up to double the cost.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom reinforces the worldwide climate for new treatments and establishes long-overdue balance to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a statement declared.

Commercial Significance

Medicines constitute one of the the United Kingdom's largest exports to the United States, which is by far the largest market for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics indicate that in the year prior to last September, the UK sold medicines totaling billions to the US. This amount represented 17.4% of British export trade in that timeframe.

"This guarantee safeguards employment, stimulates investment and sets the stage for the UK to become a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The agreement involves several key pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it judges new treatments to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a aim to double total health service expenditure on drugs from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be capped at 15%. Previously, repayments were more than 20%.

Broader Context

The deal comes amid a long-running row between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over spending levels and regulatory access.

This friction were intensified by assertions that US customers were charged several times more for the same drugs than people in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been directed toward American operations.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS must increase expenditure on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its overall budget over the past decade.
